Once you have activated the plugin, you will need to connect to the Canto API.

  1. In the WordPress Admin sidebar menu navigate to Settings  Canto.
You will see the following options:
  2. Most users will connect with the default option: company.canto.com. If your Canto subdomain ends in .canto.global or you use a legacy connection to .cantoflight.com, then select the appropriate option.
  3. Click Login to Canto. You will reach our OAuth connection screen.
  4. Please enter your Canto subdomain and login information to connect your WordPress to the Canto API.
If you have SSO set up, you may log in with your SSO login.
  5. Once authenticated, click Allow.
  6. You will be automatically redirected back to your Settings page with authentication details provided.

Note: The security token will need to be refreshed at the date indicated (30 days from when you authenticated). Your images will still be active within WordPress, but you will not be able to access the Canto API until you re-authenticate by following the login process again. This means the automatic update will not work until you re-authenticate again.

Plugin options

The plugin options will use the Canto API and operate as background tasks when enabled.

Duplicate Check - This option will use the unique file identifier in Canto and check your WordPress Media Library. If the unique file identifier is located, it will update any information from Canto into WordPress but insert the existing media link so you only have one copy on your WordPress site.

Automatic Updates - This uses the WordPress Cron functionality to search your WordPress Media Library for files imported from Canto. It will import the latest version, file information, and metadata and update accordingly in the media library. Please be advised that your site performance could be affected if you choose to run this option frequently (Every Day) and do not have the appropriate server resources available for large media library searches.

Supported file formats

Please refer to the list of supported file formats issued by WordPress.

In addition to the official information, we have the following limitations in our plugin:

  • MTS videos are displayed in our plugin, although they are not officially supported by WordPress.
  • HEIC images are not displayed in our plugin, although they are officially supported by WordPress.

How to use the Canto plugin with WordPress ‘Gutenberg’ editor

The Canto WordPress plugin creates a Gutenberg Block that allows you to import an asset from Canto directly into the WordPress editor.

  1. To use the Canto block, click the Add Block icon and search for, or click Canto under Common Blocks.
  2. This will create the Canto block with a button to open a modal overlay with the Canto interface. From here you simply locate your assets from the folder tree or by using the search function.
  3. Once you locate the asset, simply click on the file thumbnail. It will open another modal with the file details to review. Then you can click Insert into Post to import from Canto into WordPress.

Image options in WordPress Gutenberg

Once the image is imported into WordPress, the modal popups will automatically close and send you to the standard editor screen.

From here, you can set your options as you normally would for any image in WordPress. This includes alignment, alt text, image sizes defined by your theme, link to the image, as well as any additional options that are defined by your theme.

Additional metadata

When an image is imported from Canto into WordPress, it also pulls in metadata that was imported or added in Canto. This includes all the standard file info fields such as file name, title, description, and dimensions. But we also import any data that is set in the Copyright and Terms & Condition metadata fields i Canto.
