How to: Import Product data

  • Updated

    ~ minute read

Importing data into your library via CSV rather than creating them individually can not only save time, but also avoid mistakes made through manual data entry.

Please note:

Some steps in this article require specific user privileges. If you cannot complete certain steps, please contact your Administrator for a review of your assigned privileges.

Without Variants

Navigate to Admin> Product Settings> Import in the left-hand navigation area. Follow the steps on the page to begin and guide you through the import process.

Import_Process (1).png
  1. Step 1: Import your CSV by selecting the CSV file from your device that has the data you wish to import
  2. Step 2 is optional, but gives you the opportunity to assign a category, type, and library folder that corresponds with your import from what already exists in the Hub.Import_Process (2).png
    • Product Categories allow you to assign the imported products to a specific category from the product library.
    • Product Types allow you to assign specific attributes to a product based on its type (tees; material, size, logo dimensions, etc), which are presented together in the Product Details page
    • Image Folder: For a CSV with images, you have the ability to choose where the images in your CSV will go in your library or can make a new folder.
  3. Step 3:Map the headers of your CSV import to attributes within the Products Hub. Name and SKU must be mapped to add and update products.Import_Process (3).png
  4. Select “Import” on the top right of the page and you will be notified through email when your import is complete.Import_Process (4).png

With Variants

Variant products can be imported and mapped within the Product Hub if the differentiating attributes are mappable in the CSV you are importing.

Beginning your Import

Importing variants includes the basic importing steps: navigating to Admin> Product Settings> Import (vertical lefthand menu) and selecting your desired CSV.

Import_Variants (1).png

After selecting your CSV, you can select a product category to assign to your import from the options in the Product Hub or use a column from your CSV to designate which category each product in your file is assigned to. You can also select Don't Assign Category to skip this step entirely if there are multiple product categories in your CSV but no designated column header for them.

You can also select a Product type for the products in the CSV upon import and a designated image folder if you are also uploading and mapping images upon import. Not selecting a folder from the library and not mapping the Product Hub attribute Image_URL to the appropriate header in your CSV will not allow the Image to upload to the Product Hub.

Mapping Attributes

As with a basic import, the next step is to map the attributes in the CSV with the Product Hub attributes. For a successful import, the Name and SKU fields must be mapped to add and update products.

Select Continue to proceed through to your Variant settings in the next step.

Setting up the Import Tool to Recognize Your Variants

Import_Variants (3).png

In the next page, you will select Yes to show the Variant Organization and Dimensions options. These options tell the importing tool which headers or columns to identify and map your variants.

Variant Organization

This section asks what the differentiator is between variants and their parent products. It shows the importer how the variants in a CSV are grouped and connected with the parent products and distinguishes between a parent and variant product.

Variant Organization by Column:

Variant Dimensions

This section outlines which attributes in the CSV make the product a variant and where in the CSV this information is organized for accurate mapping.

  • By Column: Select this if the column header denotes the variant attribute information, and choose the corresponding columns from the CSV.

  • By Row: Select this if the variant information is found in the row, then select the column headers to identify the variant dimension and corresponding option.

Preview your Import and Finalize

Click Preview Data for a data preview to ensure that the correct fields in your CSV are mapped, and accurately note the parent and variant products before selecting Import.

If your preview does not reflect the appropriate parent and variant products, you can go back to your variant settings and make adjustments. Select Update Preview to refresh your preview screen.

Image Mapping Via Import

Much like a standard CSV import, mapping products in a CSV to Canto PIM's Product Hub requires that the NAME and SKU fields be mapped to the headers in your CSV. In addition to this, for Image mapping specifically, the attribute Image_URL from the Product Hub must be mapped to the header in your CSV that is associated with your image files.

Navigation

Got to Admin> Product Settings, and select Import on the lefthand vertical menu.

Image_Mapping (1).png

Select Choose a File to pull your CSV file from your device. To map images from your CSV and import them to Canto PIM, you will need to ensure you have a column for your image links and know the header they are assigned under to map to the Product Hub attribute Image_URL in a later step. Click the Upload button to proceed to the next step.

Assigning a Product Type and Folder Selection

Image_Mapping (4).png

Optionally, you can assign the products within a CSV import to a product type. Select from the available product types in the dropdown menu. All products within the CSV will be assigned to that product type, so if multiple types are present in your file, skip this step.

Folder Selection is a requirement for Product Image Mapping. You will need to select a destination folder in the library for the Images in your file to be uploaded to or the Images will not be uploaded to the Product Hub. They will sync between the Product Hub and the Library simultaneously. We recommend a separate folder for Product Image imports in most cases.

Mapping Required Attributes

Image_Mapping (2).png

Name, SKU, and Image_URL are required attributes that will need to be mapped between your file and the Product Hub for the Import to process successfully and for the images to also be uploaded and assigned to their respective products. During this step, you can map other necessary attributes as well, but will not be able to proceed without Name, SKU, and Image_URL mapped.

Click Continue in the top righthand side of the Import screen to proceed.

Variants/ CSV Settings

Image_Mapping (3).png

In this step, you have the ability to note for the import tool whether there are parent and variant products in your import. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on Image Mapping, so this step will be skipped. However, you can read more on Importing Variants here.

Select Preview Data to proceed

Review and Finalize Your Import

Image_Mapping (5).png

Ensure that your settings are correct, and then select Import when you are ready to proceed.

You will receive an email from Canto PIM when your import is complete, and your products and their images will be visible in the Product Hub and in the designated image folder in the library.
